Lecturers at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AEFUNAI), have urged the Federal Government to implement agreement it entered into with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

This is contained in a resolution reached by members of the ASUU, AEFUNAI branch, at its Congress held on Wednesday at the university auditorium, Ikwo.

The resolution was signed by Dr Ogugua Egwu and Dr Joseph Chukwu, the branch chairman and secretary, respectively.

The union said that implementation of the 2020 renegotiated condition of service was the irreducible minimum condition for the suspension of the proposed action.

It, therefore, urged well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on the Nigerian government to honour the agreement to avert the looming nation-wide strike.

The congress which recorded mass attendance by members expressed complete readiness and commitment to comply with the proposed strike to press home their demands.

“We pledge total support and commitment to comply with the strike until every aspect of the memorandum of action (MoA) FG reached with the union in 2020 is implemented.

“Whereas all components of the MoA are recognised as important, we uphold the approval and full implementation of the renegotiated condition of service as the irreducible minimum condition for the suspension of the proposed action.

“Regardless of how highly placed or revered, no individual or group of individuals shall cause the suspension of this action if the irreducible minimum is not fulfilled.

“The approval and implementation of this irreducible minimum should be made through our home-grown, solely designed payment platform, called the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS),” the union said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ASUU members embarked on solidarity rally on the campus to sensitise the University community on the proposed nation-wide strike. (NAN)
