The Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Mr. Fred Igwe has inaugurated a 14 man Local Organizing Committee [LOC] to plan and execute the first Port Harcourt Township [old] Borokiri soccer tournament christened Amaechi Cup.

According to Mr. Igwe, the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi revamped the community sports centres spread across the old Port Harcourt Township, including No 1 field where the tournament would be held to revive the beauty and serenity the old township once enjoyed and positively engage the energies of youths in the right direction

He said that it was the governor’s desire to make youths improve their lives through sports because sport  at all levels is one of the best tools to directly affect lives, achieve proactive and constructive results .

The competition which has N10 million, N5 million and N3 million for the first, second and third prize winners, would have the governor grace the opening ceremony. He charged the committee and participants in sports development at different levels to produce programmes for the competition, receive entries from interested teams, screen teams, arrange fixtures for the competition and guarantee security for the competition which he described as vital for the success.   He added that in time, the governor would extend the same gesture to other parts of Rivers State.

The Chairman of the LOC, Coach Daboere Dokubo on behalf of the committee members thanked the Government of Rivers State and promised to ensure a successful tournament on behalf of the State which many residents of Port Harcourt will not forget in a long time.
