After several weeks of speculation, Nigeria’s First Lady ,Patience Jonathan returned to Abuja this afternoon. She was reportedly received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport,Abuja by some government and party officials. SaharaReporters that has been following the Patience Jonathan story closely said “she was welcomed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja by officials of the Peoples Democratic Party, some female ministers, women groups and as well as party faithful bussed to the airport for the purpose.”
Several reports showed that her return from the German hospital was shelved last week in deference to advice by the doctor’s against such trip in the face of her delicate health.
Questions will remain unanswered as the presidency has failed to issue any detailed explanation to Nigerians about what happened to the First Lady.Many have said it is amazing ,this is happening in a Jonathan presidency ;an indication Nigeria’s leaders have not quite learnt any lessons from the Umaru YarAdua saga where the lack of transparent flow of information about the president’s illness threw the nation into confusion.
Yes, though it is the first lady now; a more transparent flow of information could have avoided the series of rumours about the several twists to her illness ,many have argued.
More questions now:Has she truly recovered from her illness or was she forced to return as a PR stunt? If reports last week that doctor’s stopped her from flying are to be believed ,can we now believe our First Lady is hale and hearty? Nigerians deserve full disclosure about the nation’s First Lady as they wish her quick recovery.
