The Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, has lauded the Zimbabwean Defence Forces for its role in negotiating and sustaining the institution of democratic governance in Zimbabwe.

Abe, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt by his Spokesperson, Parry Saroh Benson, was reacting to the Zimbabwean military intervention that led to the subsequent resignation of former President, Robert Gabriel Mugabe after 37 years in office.

The Senator, who is also Chairman of the Senate Committee on FERMA, noted that for an African military with penchant for holding on to power, the Zimbabwean Army has done very well.

Abe said, “Zimbabwean military has done very well. For an African Army, people expected them to shoot their way through whatever the situation was but they prefer to negotiate and sustain the institution of democratic governance in Zimbabwe.

“Today, we may not see what they have done as important but in the future it will affect the nature and manner of progress that will be experienced in the country.”

He stated that the maturity of the officers and men of the Zimbabwean Defense Forces will become a reference point in history when dealing with likely situations in the future.
