Olabanji Oladapo, Chairman, Island Club, on Saturday advised social clubs and sports- loving Nigerians to organise sports competitions for elites to make them physically and mentally alert.
Oladapo gave the advice during the 2017 Sports Week Gala Night organised by the club in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Sports Week is a five-day annual event organised by the club for members to keep fit.
Island Club is the oldest social elite club in Nigeria founded in Oct. 29, 1943.
He said that the competition was organised to make the members to be physically fit, considering the stress they undergo on daily basis.
“”It is a period also when the stress of official boredom is extinguished via sports, as participants are better shaped and mentally alert,’’ Oladapo said.
Demola Mumuney, Sport Secretary of the club, said that the Sports Week was organised to ensure that members shed weight through their active participation in one form of sporting activity or the other.
Mumuney called on other clubs and individuals to collaborate and organise competitions that would discover budding talents among youths.
““The week is a great moment of healthy sporting competition among members.
““Interestingly, it is also a period when members are expected to shed weight.
“”Plan is ongoing to organise competitions that will involve youths so that we can catch them young,’’ Mumuney said.
Lanre Shittu, represented by Taiwo Shittu, Executive Director, Lanre Shittu Motors, urged all tiers of government and private organisations to organise competitions that people could engage in after retirement to keep fit.
The Chairman commended the sponsors and winners of the different competitions to continue with the zeal and tenacity in ensuring hitch-free sporting week.
NAN reports that Guinness Nigeria Plc, Cadbury Nigeria Plc, First bank, Sheraton and Lanre Shittu Motors were sponsors of the event.
