An NGO, Beautiful Gate Handicapped Peoples Centre, has donated 20 wheelchairs and foodstuff to the School for the Handicapped Children, Sabon Layi, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau.

Mr Ayuba Gufwan, the Executive Director of the centre presented the items to the school on Friday in Sabon Layi.

Gufwan, an ex student of the institution, said that the gesture aimed at supporting the students in their studies.

He explained that the gesture was in fulfillment of his desire to alleviate the suffering of the less privileged ones in the society, particularly those with special needs.

“This visit is a home coming for me because as a little boy my father brought me here.

“At age seven, I had polio and my father brought me here first to seek remedy for my legs and see that I walk again but it didn’t work and the rest is now history.

“So, I am happy to be here today to offer our little support toward the growth of this institution.

“We are here to offer our widow’s might that will enable these promising young boys and girls to study well because they are the leaders of tomorrow.

“So, we are donating 10 wheelchairs and some food items to this school to support and give these little ones with special needs a sense belonging,” he said.

Gufwan, called on the students not to be deterred by their conditions, but be determined and committed toward using their disabilities to make a difference.

“There is ability in disability; disability is a challenge waiting to be overcome. So, you must not be discouraged at all.

“You must take your studies very seriously and be of good conduct all of the time,” he advised.

The executive director commended the commitment, sacrifices and efforts of the teachers of the institution even with meagre salaries.

Gufwan promised that his organisation would continue to support the school for the greater good of the students.

Mrs Rhoda Dabit, Assistant Head Teacher of the school, thanked Gufwan for the gesture and promised to put the materials into good use.

Some of the foodstuff donated include: bags of beans, maize, garri, rice, among others.(NAN)
