Mr John Fayemi, the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Ekiti Command, has assured the residents of adequate security before, during and after the Christmas and the New Year celebrations.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Tolulope Afolabi, quoted the commandant to have given the assurance in a statement he released to newsmen on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti.

According to the statement, Fayemi while briefing some security detachments of the command urged them to ensure “water tight-security” across Ekiti during the festive period.

The NSCDC boss said that the briefing was in line with the commitment of the corps to protecting critical national infrastructure, to re-strategise and set up their expeditions in all the 16 local government areas of Ekiti in order to reduce criminal tendencies.

The statement said that the detachment were; the Counter Terrorism, the Agro Rangers, the Armed Squad, the Anti-Vandal and the Crises Management.

Fayemi added that they had been adequately briefed with a mapped out strategies to stamp out vandalism, terrorism, brigandage, house-breaking, kidnapping and house-breaking from the state.

He added that operational guidelines had been handed over to all the units.

The commandant was said to have charged the Counter Terrorism Unit to be pro-active in all every nook and cranny of the state and fish out criminally-minded persons or group of persons.

Fayemi commanded the Agro Ranger Unit, which was dispatched to the three Senatorial Districts of the state to watch out for herders who might want to use the Christmas and the New Year holidays to destroy farms in the state.

“This is the season when trans-humanism is predominant, in which destructive herders may want to move into another location to graze their animals without any respect for human rights and environmental law.

“Protection of Critical National Infrastructure is essential at this period as public property will be put into use for the good of everybody and the need to secure them becomes necessary to allow their sustainability for our generation and future generations.

“Electrical Installation, Telecommunication Mast and Base Stations, Markets, Sacred places, Worship centres, water lines and other global commons will be adequately protected by these special units and departments across Ekiti,” the statement quoted Fayemi.

The NSCDC commandant added that to ensure protection of life and property, the various departments of the corps had positioned their plain cloth officers in all the telecoms and electrical sites in the state to ensure proper protection of the facilities during the festive season.

He said that as political activities gear up in the state ahead of the gubernatorial election, the Armed Squad Unit must not allow its members to be used by greedy politicians to intimidate their opponents.

He commanded the Armed Squad Unit to be apolitical and act strictly according the extant rules and constitution of the country.

He also warned the corps personnel against accidental discharge saying that “there is no accidental discharge theory in NSCDC”.

He told them that any arm-bearers caught intimidating others with rifles would be made to face the wrath of the law.

He however, assured them that any officer of the command, who displayed gallantry in his or her line of duties would be rewarded; calling for the cooperation of all and sundry toward promoting peace in the country.(NAN)
