Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan has expressed worry over the intrigues and infighting going on among stakeholders in the Health sector.
Dr Uduaghan, who expressed dissatisfaction over the ugly situation when the Senate Committee on Health paid him a courtesy visit in Asaba , said the infighting was uncalled for as it has negatively battered the image of the sector.
“We are worried about the infighting among stakeholders in the Health sector. The sector is faced with a lot of challenges that is why the National Health Bill is critical to those of us in the sector because the passage of the Bill will help regulate the sector,” he said.
The governor observed that the National Health Bill was critical to the development of the sector as it would help address the challenges of lack of Infrastructure and personnel in the sector.
In an interview, the Chairman of the committee, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa said so many of the challenges in the Health sector were addressed during the NMA Health Summit in Asaba.
He said the committee was committed to ensuring that the National Health Bill was passed soonest as it would help improve on the negative image of the sector and develop it.
Senator Okowa explained that the Bill when passed would regulate, manage and develop the Health sector for proper service delivery.
“We must take the interest of the average Nigerian first before our own welfare as doctors. This is why we are working hard to ensure that this Bill is passed soon,” he said.
On the issue of incessant strike in the sector, Senator Okowa observed that measures were been put on ground to enable the Minister of Health work out modalities that could reduce strike actions in the sector.
He expressed the hope that when the sector was properly regulated and the welfare of personnel adequately promoted and implemented strike would reduce considerably.
