Suspected commercial sex worker charged with stabbing friend

A 21-year-old suspected commercial sex worker, Charity Emmanuel, who allegedly stabbed her friend with a knife, was on Friday brought before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Emmanuel, who resides at Ikeja area of Lagos, is facing a charge of assault, occasioning harm.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 27, 2018 at 5.00 p.m. along Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos.

According to Emuerhi, the accused stabbed her friend, Joy Emezie, on her body causing her bodily harm.

“A serious fight ensued between the accused and the complainant who had earlier been having misunderstandings. Suddenly, the accused brought out a sharp object suspected to be a knife and stabbed the complainant.

“Emezie was rushed to the hospital because of the serious injury she sustained,’’ he said.

The prosecutor said that the case was reported at the police station and the accused was arrested for questioning.

The offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The section stipulates three years imprisonment for offenders.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Sule-Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one responsible surety in like sum.

Sule-Amzat said that the surety should be gainfully employed with an evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government and in addition, the surety must be a blood relation of the accused.

She, however, adjourned the case until Feb. 28 for mention. (NAN)
