Participating for the first time in Asian and Gulf weightlifting competitions, two Saudi women power-lifters raked in a total of 12 gold and bronze medals this week, according to the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee.

AlAnood AlKhlefy won 6 gold medals in the GCC and West Asian Weightlifting Championships held in the Omani capital Muscat, while her teammate Afnan Sabbagh won 6 bronze medals in the same competitions. More than 100 men and women from 12 countries are competing.

“AlKhlefy and Sabbagh surprised all the participants in the championship and grabbed attention after their strong performance,” the committee said in a statement on its website.

AlKhlefy won first place in the 64 kg weight class for adults, outlifting her Bahraini and Omani opponents. Sabbagh was awarded 6 bronze medals in the two championships in the 55 kg weight class for adult competitors.

The Saudi weightlifting team has raised its total medal count to 97 medals (including 67 gold medals) in the second day of the Gulf and West Asian Weightlifting Championships for juniors, youth and adults, being held at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said on Saturday. The competitions end on Monday.
