The corps marshal of Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Commission ,FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi has affirmed the high rate of accidents caused by tanker drivers. He made this known Monday at a summit organised for stakeholders in haulage operations at Valencia Hotel ,Wuse II ,Abuja.
Boboye said 1.3 million people were killed in road accident by tanker drivers last year.He also said that the corps has resolved to commence the use of speed limit device from 15th September with the introduction of new plate numbers to this effect.He further stressed that any tanker driver who fails to comply would not load” he warned
Lagos state Governor, Ambode Akinwumi,who was represented by Permanent Secretary of ministry of transport in Lagos state. Mr Oluseyi Coker said ” most of the accident caused by the tanker drivers are (attributable to) over speeding, careless driving and lack of knowledge of the road signs”.
He however urged ” the Federal Road Safety Commission to put as one of its priorities re-orientation on drivers and re-enforcement of laws guiding the road”.
Also speaking at the event was the Permanent Secretary, in the office of Secretary To The Government Of The Federation ,Alhaji Mohammed Bukar who declared the summit open assured that ” the federal government will continue to partner with Federal Road Safety Commission to create safer environment for transportation system in the country”.
