Security of lives, properties sacrosanct – Buhari tells Conference of Bishops

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that the security of lives and properties of Nigerians was sacrosanct and would continue to be protected.
Represented by the Secretary of Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha at the second plenary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), which opened in Sokoto Sunday, Buhari assured that the unfortunate incidences killings would be a thing of the past.
Noting that Nigerians were divided on the grounds of unconfirmed suspicions, the President stressed that such suspicion was almost destroying unity and love among the citizens.
“My Lord Bishops, due to circumstances we found ourselves, suspicion,  especially on religious grounds has almost destroyed the fabrics of our unity and love that bind us together. Similarly, the country has been faced with several security challenges in recent past.
“There has been a lot of negative propaganda on the plan to Islamize Nigerain by this admianration, without verifiable facts.  Issues and actions of Government pointed at as sign-post for such plans include the following four important issues:
“Membership of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC): The Sharia, Boko Haram insurgency and Herdsmen/Farmers Clashes.
“Historical and existing facts however fail to support there claims because some of these issues developed before the return to democracy in 1999 while others have been re-occurring understand every Administration since 1999,” Buhari stated.
Explaining that Nigeria’s membership of OIC dated back to 1969 when the then government secured observer status, the President appealed to religious leaders to assist against those who try use religion and ethnic sentiments to cause division through hate speeches.
“The Government came into power offering security as one of the core promises to the people. Mire than any other previous administration, the fight against religious fundamentalism and insurgency has been backed up by political will and military action.
“Fundamentalists activities have been drastically curtailed and those found culpable have been brought before the Law Court. Similarly, the fight against Boko Haram insurgency is achieving the deserved victory while efforts are on to address other socio-political issues,” Buhari further stated.
Ealier speaking, Governor Aminu Tambuwal called CBCN to continue to preach peaceful coexistence.
In his speech titled: “Young People, The Faith And Vocational Discernment,” President of CBCN, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Akubeze said they would reflect on issues that affect the Church in Nigeria.
Dignitaries at the occasion include, Plateau state governor, Simon Lalong; representatives of governor’s of Kebbi and Katsina, among others.
