The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Mr. Mike Mbama Okiro, a retired Inspector General of Police has charged new Cadet Assistant Superintendents of Police, (ASPs) who passed out at the Police Staff College Jos, Plateau State over the weekend to embrace diligence, hard work and commitment to duty as they prepare to face the challenges of their new office.
Okiro said the Police profession calls for high level of discipline and perseverance, stressing that it is not a vocation for money making, “but of sacrifice and moral rectitude”
He warned that the “exit door was still open for those of you who may be looking for a platform to become millionaires in a fortnight.
“The Nigeria Police Force is not such place and the Police Service Commission will not hesitate to sanction any of you found at the wrong side of the law, rules and regulations guiding your engagement”
Okiro however assured the new Cadets that the Force is an Institution “you will be proud of especially if you are ready to do your work without compromising the rules, stressing that the Commission would continue to monitor their career and ensure they remain committed to the service of their fatherland.
He expressed happiness that the recruitment exercise conducted by the Commission in 2016 which produced the new cadets and which was merit driven with adherence to Federal Character Principles, “have run its full course with the passing out parade ceremony. The PSC Chairman noted that he was proud of the quality of the Cadets but reminded the new intakes that their entry was at the instance of Mr. President who gave Presidential approval in 2015 for the recruitment of 10,000 Nigerians into the Force to help address the yawning shortages in the Force.
He said the recruitment was very competitive and transparent. “For the 10,000 needed for recruitment, the Commission received 911,438 applications after which 338,227 were shortlisted from the initial online screening. Out of these figures, 262,426 applied for Cadet ASP and 44,661 were shortlisted”
Okiro congratulated the new Cadets but reminded them that the journey had just started and that they cannot afford to disappoint Mr. President who ensured that the opportunity was created for them to change their destiny.
“You cannot also afford to disappoint your employers, the Police Service Commission who provided a level playing field for you to climb to this enviable height. You cannot also toy with the Nigeria Police Force, an elite security Institution in Nigeria which from today will husband your future and propel you to greater heights”.
