A non-governmental organisation (NGO), Green Janitors Sustainable Initiative (GJSI), on Monday tasked youths on the need to conserve natural environments.
Its Executive Director, Mr Abdulsalam Ashade, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that there should be more sensitisation on the need to preserve nature.
Ashade said: “Nigeria is currently facing serious climate change related natural environmental problems including landslides, erosion, desertification, drought and heat waves.
“All these combined climate changes related natural environmental problems had affected natural resources such as land, water, forests and infrastructure.
“This in turn affects the livelihood of communities, especially farmers, poor households and families, dependent on natural resources for survival.’’
He said that the initiative had recently embarked on an outreach to Lekki Conservative Centre through its project tagged: “Youth4Nature Movement” to educate youths on the importance of natural conservation.
Ashade said that the movement was also aimed at educating young people in Nigeria about Nature and Climate Action, and to hold political leaders and other stakeholders accountable on both climate and ecological crises.
“One of the objectives is to increase the understanding of climate change impact among women, youths and other vulnerable groups, through advocacy and evidence-based vulnerability analysis and dissemination,’’ he said. (NAN)
