The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) is to establish a journalism training school to enhance the development of the profession in the country.

The Managing Director of NAN, Mr Buki Ponle, disclosed this during an interactive session with the Agency’s staff in Lagos on Wednesday.

Ponle said that the proposed NAN journalism school would be located in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, where a parcel of land had been acquired for the project.

“With available resources, we will utilise the land in Ilorin because it is has been earmarked for that purpose.

“As the year comes on, we will think about doing something at least to build the training school on that land by God’s Grace,” he said.

Responding to various questions on welfare and editorial operations, the NAN boss urged all staff to work harder as the management was doing a lot to put smiles on their faces this New Year.

“We shall on our own part do the much we can to improve your lot, in terms of welfare, in terms provision of equipment to make the working condition better.

“We will do whatever it takes to make the agency’s workers be at ease, perform better and increase productivity,” he said.

The managing director also reassured NAN staff of adequate training programmes in addition to improved welfare.

He said that the agency would soon organise a forum with subscribers to address various issues ranging from payment of subscriptions to image, as well as misrepresentation in the usage of NAN news content.

On complaints about unpublished stories, Mr Wale Ojetimi, a Deputy Editor-in-Chief, advised reporters to put in their best to make their stories publishable.

Ojetimi also urged reporters to make their stories clear, concise and straightforward, and endeavour to always read over published stories for continuous improvement on their copies.

Also speaking, Mrs Ijeoma Popoola, a Deputy Editor-in-Chief, urged reporters to get quality reports and feature articles to give NAN an edge. (NAN)
