After months of speculation, Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan has formally declared his intention to contest the 2015 presidential election on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party,PDP.
At the event held at Eagle Square ,Abuja, Jonathan declared that he has “accepted” to join the race.
There was a standing ovation by his supporters ,party members and loyalists led by his wife Patience, Vice President Namadi Sambo and his wife, Amina, as well as the National Chairman of the PDP, Muazu Adamu, among others.
Actually, Tuesday’s declaration was a mere formality as stakeholders in the party had conceded the ticket to Jonathan when they endorsed him as the party’s sole candidate.
He is expected to enjoy the advantage of incumbency as he battles the yet to be decided presidential candidate of the main opposition All Progressives Congress,APC in the 2015 race.
Whether the advantage of incumbency will work in Jonathan’s favour- as it always does in Nigeria’s usually controversial presidential elections – remains to be seen.
