Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram insurgents on Thursday opened fire on residents of Bajoga town in Gombe State in the early hours of Thursday, a credible online news platform, The Eagle Online has reported.
Eyewitnesses said the attack was carried out at about 6am.
Bajoga town is located in Funakaye Local Government Area.
The suspected Boko Haram members were said to have started shooting sporadically immediately they entered the town.
Residents scampered for safety, with a lot of them fleeing into the surrounding bushes.
The attackers also bombed the Divisional Police Headquarters and Police Area Command.
A bank and a school were also bombed by the attackers.
It was learnt that it took security agents three hours to overcome the attackers, who then moved on to another town, Ashaka.
As at press time, casualty figure could not be determined as many are believed to have been killed while fleeing into the bush.
According to a source, the insurgents were well armed when they drove into Bajoga town in more than 20 Hilux vans.
The source added: “Up till now as I am talking to you, there is still sporadic gunshots in the town.
“Many have fled and many are trapped in their houses.”
It could be recalled that there was a similar attack by the Boko Haram sect on Ashaka town, also in Funakaye Local Government Area.
One policeman was injured in the attack.
Confirming the incident to newsmen, the Police Public Relations Officer for Gombe State, DSP Fwaji Atajiri, said in the early hours on Thursday gunmen attacked Bajoga town.
Atajiri, however, said security agents were able to repel the attack.
He said the situation is now under control, urging residents to report any suspicious movement within their vicinity.
The police spokesman also advised residents to go about to their normal businesses.
Atajiri said security agents would do everything possible to ensure that lives and property of citizens are protected.
