The Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice, ANEEJ has welcomed the passage of this important bill particularly because of the relevance of its content to the Nigerian economy. ANEEJ in a statement said “We encourage the present government to work assiduously with the 8th General Assembly to see it passed into law. A passage of the Bill into law certainly signals to the international community that Nigeria is indeed ready to put its house in order and re-order its economic priorities.
On the 4th day of June, 2015, the Federal House of Representatives of Nigeria eventually passed the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, along with another set of Bills that the 7th National Assembly had been considering for passage..
‘With a fall in the price of oil worldwide, together with the 167th Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, meeting already under way in Vienna, Austria, we are worried that since the PIB did not receive the approval of the Senate before it wound down its activities recently, Nigeria may not be able to benefit from the improvement already being seen in the demand for oil worldwide, and the steady demand in the market’, ANEEJ, Executive Director David Ugolor has said.
OPEC is celebrating its Golden Anniversary at a time when the clamour for renewable energy as a source of energy dominates international discourse. It is in line with the uncertainties that trail a reliance on oil that the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice, ANEEJ, has championed the call for a speedy passage of the PIB.
Since 2012 ANEEJ had called for the passage of the Bill into law.
