The Senate on Tuesday described the ongoing recall process of Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi west as exercise dead on arrival.

The matter was raised during plenary by Senate Dino Melaye through order 14. He told his colleagues that several dead people are on the list of signatures submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Melaye added that the recall was initiated by the Kogi State Government and not his constituents. “As I speak, I have several death certificates confirming that dead people are in the recall register submitted to the INEC,” Melaye said.

In his contribution Senator Peter Nwanboshi described the recall process as an attempt to rubbish democracy in the country. He wondered why  Kogi State Governor,Yahaya Bello,  would think of recalling a legislator simpling for criticizing him.

Nwanboshi added that the country is being  characterized by impunity. “The All Progressives Congress (APC) campaigned on (against) impunity but impunity has taken over the government of APC” Nwanboshi said.

The Deputy Senate President wondered why they are wasting time discussing the issue that is already dead on arrival. He made  reference to a section of the constitution that stipulated that after verification of the signature by INEC, the commission will forward the register of signatures to Senate for further verification before the recall process is completed.
