The Nigerian Army has firmly dismissed rumors circulating on social media that insurgents have taken control of a military training camp in Kontagora, Niger State.

The statement follows a claim made by Honourable Abdullahi Isah, representing Kontagora II Constituency, on the floor of the Niger State House of Assembly on October 28, 2024, that insurgents had overrun the military training area, displacing residents from 23 communities across Kontagora and Mariga.

“We acknowledge the palpable unease this baseless claim may have stirred within the Kontagora and Mariga communities, as well as Niger State as a whole,” the Nigerian Army stated. “However, we wish to clarify that no credible threat exists in those areas as being peddled.”

The Army emphasized that an investigation conducted by its intelligence unit confirmed that no insurgent presence or hostile activities were detected. The individuals observed in the area were, in fact, herders seeking grazing grounds for their livestock. “No malicious intent was detected, and no hostile actions were observed,” the statement read.

The Army expressed appreciation for the vigilance of the communities and for Honourable Isah’s commitment to public safety but urged all stakeholders to verify information through official channels before sharing it. “Misinformation of this nature has the potential to spread unwarranted fear, engender panic, misdirect valuable resources away from real security priorities, and ultimately aggravate the security situation,” the Army cautioned.

The statement further assured that the Nigerian Army’s training areas remain secure, fortified, and fully equipped to handle any potential security threat. “The Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of our host communities and Nigerians in general,” Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, reiterated.

The Army’s response underscores its continued focus on maintaining security and dispelling any rumors that may cause fear among the public.
