LG chairman pledges to revive culture of proper refuse disposal

Chief Isaac Anwuzia, Chairman, Aniocha South Local Government Area, Delta, has pledged to revive that culture of proper refuse disposal in the area.

Anwuzia, who addressed newsmen on Monday while removing the refuse dumped at Kwale junction, Ogwashi-Uku, noted that it had been the nature of the people of the area to dump waste indiscriminately.

He said that there was the need for the people to be properly enlightened and remind them of the need to go back to the old culture of keeping their environment clean.

The chairman also said that the imperative of safe environment was in line with the Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa’s agenda.

He said the dumping the waste at the Kwale junction was not patriotic, especially when with a sign post warned the people not to dump waste and that culprits would be fined N50, 000.

Anwuzia said the council had set up a task force to apprehend and prosecute offenders in indiscriminate disposal of refuse, in line with the law.

He also said that the council had rolled out tractors to clear the refuse in line with Okowa’s administration’s clean and safe environment agenda for investment to thrive.

“The people dumping the refuse are not patriotic; you can see a sign warning that anyone who dumps refuse here will pay a fine of N50, 000.

“We are sure that they dump the refuse around midnight, but we have a task force that will now engage in round the clock monitoring.

“Anyone caught dumping refuse indiscriminately will be taken to the revenue court.

‘’We are taking the issue of clean environment serious to complement the efforts of our Governor, Sen. Okowa in developing our state.

“We are clearing the refuse at Afor market; our people are known for keeping their surrounding clean.

“So we have to enlighten our people to revive that culture of proper disposal of refuse,’’ he said.

He, however, called on those living near the waste dump to monitor and ensure that those involved in the act were apprehended.

The chairman reminded the people close to waste dump that they were at a greater risk of diseases outbreak.(NAN)
