The Southern Youth Assembly of Nigeria (SYAN) has pledged total support for the peaceful coexistence and unity of the country.
Mr Jonathan Adekunle, the National Speaker of SYAN, made the pledge while addressing newsmen at a news conference on Wednesday in Ilorin.
On the 2023 general election, Adekunle reiterated the group’s commitment to the politics of equity and fairness.
He called for the Presidency of Nigeria to be rotated between the Southern and Northern Nigeria, and a resolution be made that the next president should emerge from the Southern region.
“The leadership of SYAN commends the Southern Governor’s Forum led by Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu for their efforts so far in defending the region and Nigeria at all times.
“The leadership of SYAN commends the security operatives for their relentless efforts in restoring security and safety of lives and properties.
“We therefore also use this medium to commiserate with families and loved ones of those who have fallen in the line of duty,” he said.
The SYAN spokesman called on leaders across the six geo-political zones to come together and discuss how to bring about genuine unity and the kind of system of government that would strengthen national unity, progress and socio-economic of the country.
According to him, there is the need for the creation of additional states in the southeast geopolitical zones for equity and fairness.
He observed that the southeast geo-political zone is the only zone in Nigeria that has five states.
Adekunle also advocated for the complete autonomy of local governments, describing them as government at the grassroots.
He decried that majority of decisions about the local governments were decided by state governors.
“The SYAN, therefore, demand the local government autonomy to enable the citizens to see and enjoy the dividends of democracy.
“The Association calls on Federal Government of Nigeria to find a lasting solution to an unstable economy that is affecting the nation and its citizens while appealing against the planned fuel hike.
“The Association hereby passes a vote of confidence on Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, the executive Governor of Ondo state and Chairman Southern Governor’s Forum, on his outstanding leadership in piloting the affairs of the Southern Governor’s Forum,” he said.
Adekunle also explained the association’s commitment to educate and orientate the youths on federal and state laws, and organise seminars, workshops, skill acquisition, and youth investment and empowerment. (NAN)
