Nigeria Elected Chair Of NNHRI

NHRCNigeria’s National Human Rights Commission was unanimously elected to chair the Network of National Human Rights Institutions in West Africa (NNHRI) at the General Assembly of the Network held in Abuja today.
Nigeria succeeds Senegal the immediate Chair of the Network for a renewable tenure of 3 years.
In his acceptance speech, the Executive Secretary of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Bem Angwe said that he will continue to build on the solid foundation laid by his predecessors.
He said the Network will take proactive steps to ensure that human rights institutions in the sub-region are strengthened to conform with the Paris Principles both in law and in practice adding that the Network will embark on advocacy for the establishment of human rights institutions in countries where they are not already established.
Prof. Angwe also said under the chairmanship of Nigeria, the Network will ensure the promotion and protection of the rights of all persons living in the sub-region and work conscientiously towards the unity and integration of the region.
The 3-day Annual General Meeting is being attended by all member countries of the ECOWAS.
