Recently, one of my clients asked for my advice on what tool or software that he needed to buy that he could use to enable him attract more traffic to his financial news website.
I did a quick search for the best online tools for long tail keyword research for 2015, you must know that in trying to do keyword research, one cannot effectively do it using a single tool but with more than 2 tools combined for increased traffic and revenue.
I picked these 3: Adword Keyword planner, Hittail and longtailpro. I will show you why one tool cannot do the job well if you will stick around and read this article to the end.

First, let us look at the cost of some keyword research tools and it will blow your mind if you are on a budget like my client. The cost shows that keyword research is the “koko” (most important stuff) in SEO.

From experience, I know that for anyone to be able to see and benefit from your great content online, your site must regularly appear in the organic result of search engines at the top-first-10 results on search engine result page (SERP) of google, yahoo, bing, ask, etc. But if you don’t use the right keywords in your article, they won’t appear on SERP and won’t get read.
Below, are the 10 steps I took to arrive at our goal of occupying the top position in long tail key word phrases:
1. Identify your Seed Keywords:
We identified 5 seed keywords relevant to the industrial and products my client wanted to rank high on.
For these, we chose the following seed keywords: Mortgage, Forex, Budget, Real Estate and Insurance.
Why and how did we get to pick these seed word?
We did not use any physical tool neither did we consult with the man with a crystal ball, we used the most powerful and authentic tool, our brain. We brainstormed for just about 5 minutes to arrive at these 5 seed keywords because we asked 2 relevant questions:
a. What industry or product are we interested in?
b. What more do people want to know about these product or industry?
These 2 simple questions if answered will help you quickly uncover juicy seed keywords like a SEO Pro.
2. Extract long tail keywords and related long tail keywords:
We used Hittail to harvest targeted long tail keywords based on my clients existing traffic, furthermore, it also made a huge list of suggested long tail keywords that can be exported and used for writing articles.
These keywords were exported and saved in a file. To be analyzed later as we go on. You could also use Long tail Pro which rely heavily on Google adword account or Ubersuggestion for this step.
3. Know and analyze similar sites:
It is essential to learn from similar sites like yours, no man is an island. You think you know it all? You are mistaken; others can teach you a thing or two.
For these we would have to examine closely the nature of the contents on similar sites to see what they are truly doing well, and when you find something they are doing better than you learn from it.
Search using similar sites like your home page url + the seed keywords, for example type something like this “www.examples.com + how to reduce stomach fat” and see the structure, tone and style of writing of the content.
4. Find out how many persons is searching and how much they are willing to pay for the result.
Google for now is one of the reliable places to find the number of people including a particular keyword in search phrase query. So,
Head over to google Adword www.adwords.google.com/KeywordPlanner. Find new keywords by selecting search for new keyword idea.
Google keyword planner allows a maximum of 199 unique keyword phrase, so copy and paste 199 long tail keywords from your list on product and services box, type your web address and customize your search as you wish, but ensure nothing less than 2000 monthly searches, $2 bid and a medium to low competition before you click on Get ideas.
Google keyword planner will generate a table containing keywords, Average monthly searches, competition and suggested bid.
Do this until you have exhausted all the keywords generated in (2) and (3) above.
5. Group your keywords:
Head to WordStream.com www.wordstream.com/keyword-grouper or KeywordGrouper.com http://keywordgrouper.net , its a free application to group your relevant long tail keywords generated from google adwords keyword planner.
You can now separate them into groups containing 3 or 4 keyword phrase
i.e.
what is the best smartphone
best android smartphone
Where to buy good smartphone
features of good smartphone
6. Writing insightful rich content articles
A good article that will rank high on search engine should contain more than 800 words and for best result, let it be more than 1000 words or more, this article you are reading is more than 1770 words. Search engine has this notoriety of stamping most short articles as not authoritative and as such not relevant. Probably, the algorithm when it sees a short article wonders that this writer spent a short time writing and so the article may not be an important matter that is being discussed, hence it is labeled instantly as – may not be too relevant because it contains fewer facts, figures, illustrations, etc.
Ask yourself, why does Wikipedia.org rank more highly than every other site or why is it that nobody is paying any dime for wikipedia related terms on advertisement on doubleclick? A typical Wikipedia page is filled heavily with content containing facts, figures, definitions, explanations, etc. like no other site on the internet.
So, use the Wikipedia model and see if you will not dominate SERP and be rewarded by it.
I recommended Hittail in extracting relevant unique long tail keywords to my client not just because of the cost but because it will give him an idea of keywords that people included in the search query on search engine that brought them to his site, this will help him focus more on how to make those visitors to keep coming, and it also provides very useful suggestions on what kind of article to publish especially when one runs out of ideas and the most juicy part that made this client mouth water was the fact that Hittail will enable him to easily find the right person to write his articles for him.
7. Make your articles Viral
Sharing your articles on social media is now a sine qua non in today’s digital word. Let people, friends on facebook, twitter followers, etc. know you have published something useful online. Don’t forget to share your link on other social book marking sites like tumblr Redit, stumble, delicious, printerest, instagram, googleplus, knol, etc.
Head over to related site with similar contents, read their articles and leave a comment with a link to your site, This comment help the SEO of the site owner’s site and it equally helps you; it’s a win-win-situation.
Go to Hootsuit open a free account and schedule a regular sharing of your content on social media and other social book marking site.
8. Re-submit all article links
Since search engines are not resident in your server and because they only visit at specific times, it will not hurt if you submit your article links immediate it was published, this links helps search engines to quick index your pages. You may also resubmit your facebook page to search engines. If you think this action isn’t relevant, try searching for your facebook page on google, you will discover that the search result page will only show your facbook activities or likes of 2 or 3 months ago, funny.
9. Tweak your published articles
Why do we need to tweak an already published article? It is because at the point of tweaking we discover slight errors, wrongly expressed grammar, irrelevant sentences needing deletion, etc.
Come to think of it, don’t you think you can be helped by the points raised in your article? Read it, find areas you could re jiggle a bit. Tweaking makes your content more relevant, Tweaking is something like updating.
10. Wait and see how you articles will gradually climb until they occupy the top results of search engine result pages.
