Yobe Govt distributes materials worth N24.6m to fishermen

Yobe Government on Saturday distributed canoes and fishing materials worth N24.6 million to 74 fishing households in 10 local government areas to improve economic growth.

The state governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam, while distributing the materials to beneficiaries in Gashua, said “this is an empowerment programme which seeks to prepare the beneficiaries for gainful self-employment, wealth creation and economic empowerment.

Gaidam, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Mustapha Gajerima, said: “I have already approved the development of over five thousand hectares of land for irrigation at Boloram, Jakusko, Mugura and Nguru Lake.

“No fewer than five thousand youth will be gainfully employed in these schemes which will not only provide employment, but food and cash crops for domestic use and export.”

Gaidam assured that the state government would provide the enabling environment for irrigation for the cultivation of 1,500 hectares of land in the state.

He said that N142 million worth of skill acquisition equipment have been procured and distributed to training centres across the state.

The Commissioner for Agriculture, who was also represented by Abubakar Dugu, the acting Permanent Secretary in the ministry, urged the beneficiaries not to sell the materials, but use it for their economic empowerment. (NAN)
