Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has urged corps members posted to the state to step down the training and skills learnt during their three-week orientation course, to their host communities.
The governor stated this at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Batch B Stream I set orientation course at the Magaji Dan-Yamusa National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Permanent orientation camp in Keffi, Nasarawa State on Tuesday.
Sule, who was represented by Mr Ja’afaru Ango, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, congratulated the 1,688 corps members and camp officials for achieving a hitch-free orientation exercise.
According to him, on getting to their Places of Primary Assignments (PPA), corps members should step down their training to their host communities, especially the youths and adolescents.
He said: “this will help the youth to develop a positive mindset and the self esteem needed to keep them off the streets and be gainfully engaged.
“Remember this is one of the many ways through which you can give back to the scheme and the nation.
“The corps members should feel free to relate with the host communities as they would do to their fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters.
“Corps members should also accept their postings in good faith, as they have been done in line with the posting policies of the scheme and the felt needs of the state.
“Your postings to the nooks and crannies of the state is geared towards achieving the objectives of the scheme and also towards bringing development to the grassroots “.
The governor reassured the corps members of state government’s statutory responsibility to their welfare, security and general well-being.
“Indeed Nasarawa State is peaceful and you will come to see it as a home away from home. Let me reiterate that your security and safety is guaranteed,” he added.
In his remarks, Mr Abdullahi Jikamshi, Coordinator of the scheme in the state, congratulated the corps members for conducting themselves properly during the orientation.
According to him, the series of lectures and the new skills acquired by the corps members during the orientation were designed to empower them to be self reliant, employers of labour and not be job seekers.
“The corps members have been posted in line with the current NYSC posting policy to four critical areas which are education, health, agriculture and rural infrastructure.
“I, therefore, urge you to settle down quickly and contribute meaningfully to enriching the lives of the people of your host communities and Nasarawa state.
“You are expected to ensure harmonious
relationship, respect their ways of life, religion, customs and traditions and live peacefully with everyone throughout the service year,” he said.
He also urged them to make valid contributions by identifying with the felt needs of their host communities and carry out viable Community Development Projects (CDP).
“Such projects will ensure the betterment of communities and the enhancement of their living conditions,” he added. (NAN)
