Porter in court for allegedly stealing alcoholic drinks

A 46-year-old porter, Joseph Watyil, on Friday appeared in a Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly stealing packs alcoholic drinks.The police charged Watyil, a resident  of Mpape, Abuja, with  trespass and theft.The prosecutor, Mr Babajide Olanipekun, told the court that a Manager at Edmudian Court Hotel, Mr Samuel Mbang, reported the  case  at Dawaki Police Station, Abuja, on Jan. 28, 2021.Olanipekun said that the hotel’s security guard  arrested the defendant with one carton of Black Bullet valued at N12, 000, on the said date.

He said that later, the complainant, Mbang,  took stock of drinks in the hotel’s  store and discovered that two packs of Double Black worth N17, 000 and two packs of Red Bull  worth at N29, 000 were also missing.According to the prosecutor, other missing drinks include, six packs of Origin Bitters worth N51, 000 and 13 packs of Black Bitters  worth N162,000.

The prosecutor said that during police investigations, some of the items were recovered from the defendant, while  items worth N259, 500  were not recovered.The alleged offences contravene the provisions of Sections 342 and 289 of the Penal Code.

The judge, Mr Muhammad Adamu, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100, 000  with one surety who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.Adamu ordered that the address of the surety must be verified, and adjourned the case  until Feb. 24 for hearing. (NAN)
