Ogoni Students in the diaspora over the weekend rose from a meeting where they deliberated on the United States Supreme court’s ruling in Esther Kiobel Vs. Royal Dutch Shell Plc. on April 17, 2013.In a press release titled: “The Era Of Human Right Or Corporate Dominance: The Case Of Esther Kiobel Vs. Royal Dutch Shell, PLC” the Ogoni students said they are appaelled by the US apex court ruling
The press release signed by Pius Barikpoa Nwinee, President, NUOS Intl USA said, “NUOS International USA was appalled at the U.S Supreme Court’s ruling which denied justice for torture, extra-judicial killings, and crimes against humanity in Esther Kiobel Vs. Royal Dutch Shell Plc. We, as U.S. law abiding citizens though respectful of the apex court’s decision view the ruling which negates Human Right while exalting corporate dominance as political. We are encouraged that as long as justice maintains its universality, Royal Dutch Shell Company will certainly have a day in court for terrorist activities against the innocent people of Ogoni.
NUOS international USA also said it views “ the sudden departure of Chief Justice John Robert’s court from the 1789 Alien Tort Statutes (ATS), which ‘allows United States courts to hear human rights cases brought by foreign citizens for conduct committed outside the united States’ as un- American, double standard, and undemocratic.”
“We also use this medium to express appreciation to thousands of supporters across the globe for plaintiffs in Esther Kiobel Vs. Royal Dutch Shell Oil Plc”,Ogono students added.
They also argued that “The U.S. Supreme Court may have denied claim to plaintiffs in this case of torture, killing, and crimes against humanity by setting Shell Oil Company free but the struggle continue.
NUOS International reiterated that Ogoni struggle is non-violent and therefore urged Ogoni people and supporters to respect Ogoni non-violent creed and respect the decision of the court even if it is a political storm.
“NUOS International again thanks the American public, friends, and supporters of the Ogoni struggle (all over the world), for standing with us. We will forever express gratitude to the law firm, Berger & Montague, P.C., Mr. Paul H. Carey D’ Davino, EarthRights International, United
Nation’s Human Right Commission and hundredth others that filed Amicus briefs in support of plaintiffs in Esther Vs. Royal Dutch Shell Plc. We thank them for their courage”,the statement said.
