A Peoples Democratic Party, PDP insider has described the sudden resignation of ex President Olusegun Obasanjo as chairman Board of Trustees, BOT of the party as a ‘clever’ move. The PDP topshot said Obasanjo’s tenure was near its end anyway !But his sudden move appears to be ruffling feathers within the party.
Speaking to Newsdiaryonline.com on condition of anonymity, the former top national executive council member of the party said “You know he Obasanjo is a clever man.His term is coming to an end and he knows that if he stands for re-election, he can never win ,so he smartly resigned. And he made it look like he did it out of some altruistic reason.’’
President Obasanjo who was reported to have been responsible for the success of ex Governor Segun oni of Ondo state as the south west zonal chairman, also made frantic efforts to successfully install ex Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola of Osun state as national secretary of the party. So, his decision to resign from BOT chair came like a bolt out of the blue.
Reports said the former president has become uncomfortable with the new reality in the party after the emergence of Bamanga Tukur as national chairman. Some of Tukur’s allies are believed to be political rivals of OBJ within the party. But there still appears to be an explicable side of the story to OBJ’s resignation.Could it be just about his reelection?Or is there more to it?Has it got anything to do with his alleged protest against Jonathan’s 2015 re-election bid? In deed the 2015 project is set to embarrass OBJ because it was the former president who announced that Jonathan had pledged to do one term. So is there a disagreement over the plot?Has the political godson eventually fallen out with his godfather? The answers lie in the belly of time.
While tendeing his resignation earlier this week ,OBJ said “I have formally sent in my letter of resignation as the Chairman of BOT of PDP to the National Chairman of the party as prescribed in the party’s constitution.
“I have formally requested the President to allow my bowing out and to issue a short statement to that effect.
“By relieving myself of the responsibility for chairmanship of BOT of PDP, I will have a bit more time to devote to the international demand on me.”
