National Teachers’ Institute, Kaduna has blamed state governments for not sponsoring training of teachers and upgrading of their teaching qualifications and standards across the country.
The Institute also expressed dismay over refusal by most state governments to improve the low capacity of teachers and produce quality students, particularly at primary and secondary school levels.
It equally traced mass failure of students in at major examinations to lack of attention by state governments to prioritize teacher education.
Speaking at its 4th National Teachers’ Summit and 3rd Convocation ceremony, the Director General of the institute, Dr. Aminu Ladan Sharehu emphasized that it was only when government at all levels take training and re-training of teachers seriously that the country could attain high quality of teaching in Nigeria as well as sound students that will meet up with the challenges of modern world .
Dr.Sharehu therefore urged all stakeholders, including the private sector to rise up to the occasion and support NTI to continue to promote teaching as well as education standards in the country.
He said that the institute has designed a platform for proper understanding of open and distance education , thus the theme:” Open and Distance Education a Catalyst for Production of Quality Teachers and Transformation of Nigeria.”
During the convocation ceremony, Dr Sharehu announced that over 56 thousand graduated this year.
