The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) is collaborating with
Nigeria National Commission for UNESCO (NATCOM-UNESCO) to tackle Nigeria’s water challenges through
sustainable resource management.

The collaboration was announced during a working visit by NIHSA’s Director-General, Umar Mohammed, to the
Secretary-General of NATCOM-UNESCO, Dr Olagunju Lateef in Abuja on Thursday.

Mohammed noted the importance of hydrological data in promoting sustainable development and improving disaster management.

He explained that accurate and timely data on water resources is crucial for informed decision-making, especially as climate
change increasingly impacts water availability and quality.

He added that “hydrological data not only aids in planning and resource allocation, but also plays key role in mitigating natural
disasters, thereby strengthening community resilience.”

He explained that the partnership would enhance data collection and sharing, an essential component in achieving the UN
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Responding, Lateef welcomed the collaboration, emphasising the importance of joint efforts in capacity building, research and public awareness.

He said “this partnership has the potential to yield meaningful outcomes in our shared objectives of sustainable water management.
We fully support NIHSA’s initiatives.”

He added that the collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to SDGs related to clean water, sanitation, climate action
and sustainable urban development.

He said it also promotes resilient and sustainable approach to managing Nigeria’s water resources, which will
benefit both the environment and the population at large. (NAN)
