NASS Elections ‘Free, Fair And Transparent’ –NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress,NLC has described the elections which produced  leaders of the 8th National Assembly were  “obviously free, fair and transparent and a victory for democracy. “

A statement by Kiri Mohammed,acting president of NLC said “We congratulate all members of both chambers of the National Assembly on the successful election of their new leadership.

“The way the elections were conducted was obviously free, fair and transparent and a victory for democracy.  We hope this will establish their independence, focus and patriotic commitment to deepening democracy and development in Nigeria.

“We also applaud President Mohammadu Buhari for refusing to interfere with the elections.  We hope this will serve as a lesson to all politicians, political parties and indeed, all organisations who must always allow democracy to run its full course without any dictate or imposition of candidates or views on others. All arms of government must be allowed to function in accordance with the constitution without interference.

NLC  said  the “The National Assembly should at all times be independent.

“While we salute all members of the new National Assembly on their inauguration, we appeal to them to revisit all bills that are before them especially the Petroleum Industry Bill, which has been before the parliament since the 6th National Assembly.

Mohammed said “On behalf of the National Executive Council of the NLC and the entire Nigerian workers, we welcome the 8th National Assembly and congratulate Senator Bukola Saraki, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, their deputies and other leaders on their election and wish them successful tenures.  We do hope they will use their exhausted offices to move our country to greater heights by ensuring people driven bills are given more serious attention.
