Most Rev. Christopher Ede, the Archbishop of the Methodist Church, Enugu Diocese has urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the entrenchment of peace and good governance in the country.
Ede made the call in a state of the nation address at the end of the church 44thSynod held at Emmanuel Methodist Church, Nsukka in Enugu State.
The archbishop decried the litany of litigation at various election petition tribunals across the country after the general elections and pleaded to those involved to sheathe their swords.
“The 2019 general elections had come and gone. For some it is won and lost and to others it has opened a litany of litigation.
“As we await the May 29 inauguration of newly elected officers, I congratulate all those who have won and urge magnanimity and inclusiveness.
“For some who felt disappointed at the outcome of the elections in some areas, I will only admonish that St. Paul has said that no one can be in authority unless God enables him.
“Even evil leaders can be used by God for His purpose. So let us just keep praying for those in authority as is our spiritual duty as believers,’’ he admonished.
On security challenges in the country, Ede advised President Muhammadu Buhari to muster enough political will to restructure the security architecture and chose the best hands and avoid nepotism in appointment of such sensitive positions.
The cleric urged Nigerians to be security conscious and report suspicious movements to security agencies.
The archbishop said the church was in the forefront of contributing her quota towards fighting unemployment, poverty and corruption.
He said the church had organised skill acquisition programmes in collaboration with the Bank of Industry, the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and other agencies for its youths.
The theme for the 2019 Synod is ‘Obedience to God is better than sacrifice’ taken from 1 Samuel 1:22b. (NAN)
