Former Nigerian league champion, Kano Pillars football club on Thursday defeated former African Legends 2-1 at a novelty football match organised to support Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North East.
The football match, held at Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, was organised by the two former African football of the year award winners, Kanu Nwankwo of Nigeria and El-Hadji Diouf of Senegal.
Kano Pillars scored their first goal in the third minute of the match, while the second came after 25 minutes into the game through same Jersey number 15 player, Nafi’u Muhammed.
The former African legends scored their first goal in 25 minutes of the second half of the match through El-Hadji Diouf, wearing number 19 Jersey.
Diouf told newsmen after the match that the charity football tagged Match-4-IDPs, was to commence the drive for support for IDPs.
According to him, the passion for the game is immense and it is the sport that unites Nigerians around the world irrespective of differences.
One-time Super Eagle’s super star, Daniel Amokachi, said the match was organised to support IDPs who were displaced as a result of insurgency in the North East.
He said “people came all the way from Canada and America, as well as
African countries to show love to IDPs and support them “and to make them feel that they are not forgotten.”
Amokachi added that they were in Kano to show love and concern to IDPs as one family, and to support them with whatever was generated from the match.
Among the African Legends players who played the novelty match were
Garba Lawal, Tijjani Babangida and former Zimbabwean National Team’s Captain, Benjamin Nwareware. (NAN)
