The US State Department said “These designations are an important and appropriate step, but only one tool in what must be a comprehensive approach by the Nigerian government to counter these groups through a combination of law enforcement, political, and development efforts,”
It also said that the sects which have led to the deaths of thousands people in Nigeria have links with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM ).
The sects’ terror activities which began in 2009 have resulted in suicide bombing attacks on Churches,Mosques,UN office in Abuja and Police Headquarters in Abuja and other targets.Foreigners as well as Nigerians have also been kidnapped by suspected Boko Haram and Ansaru sect members.
A state of emergency is currently in force in Nigeria’s North Eastern States of Adamawa ,Borno and Yobe as the federal government fights to checkmate the sects.
