The Green Party of Nigeria (GPN) has insisted that local government election must hold on May 12, in spite of the fire incident that razed the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission building on Saturday.

Alhjai Ahmed Zagi, State Chairman of the party, said this in a statement made available to the News men shortly after the fire incident in Kaduna.

Zagi said that the party was deeply saddened by the development happening few days to the long awaited local government elections in the state.

“We call on the state government and law enforcement agencies to fully investigate the incidence surrounding the fire outbreak to erase suspicions of sabotage from those who may not want the polls to hold.

“GPN is worried about this unfortunate incident, but wishes to categorically state that in spite of the development, elections in Kaduna state must go on as scheduled.

“Our party believes in true and genuine democracy and is of the view that the local government areas which are the closest to the grassroots, deserve to be administered by elected representatives at the council and ward levels.

“GPN has committed a lot of resources in preparing for the polls and will not hesitate to seek redress in court of law should the polls fail to hold as scheduled,” Zagi said.

He said GPN is a new breed political party that believes in equity, justice and fairness.

NAN recalls that, fire on Saturday razed the two-storey building of Kaduna state electoral body, few weeks before the local government election in the state.

The polls to elect chairmen and councilors in the 23 local governments and 255 wards had been scheduled for May 12, using the card readers and electronic voter machines. (NAN)
