The theft of electricity by consumers has always been a major challenge, said Engineer Ernest Mupwaya, managing director of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC.
Mupwaya made this assertion on Saturday during his presentation at a workshop for energy correspondents.
The AEDC, he said, has been working in collaboration with government agencies such as the Ministry of Justice and the police among others to tackle the challenge.
Speaking on the menace of electricity theft, Mupways said, “It is a very serious issue which we are fighting with collaboration with (government agencies).
The AEDC boss also outlined the various reforms which have been implemented to reposition the company. Several steps ,including automation, are being implemented to avoid leakages .
He advised customers not to pay for things such as installation of poles and metres. The AEDC boss also vowed to deal with any of the company’s staff caught in unwholesome practices.
Speaking on the regulation of electricity supply industry, Dr Ransom Owan,pioneer chairman, NERC said the power sector reform in Nigeria has been consistent.A regulator, he said, must always prevent market abuse.
