Over 5,121 people were killed in 9,383 crashes across Nigeria in 2017, the Niger state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Joel Dagwa has disclosed.
Dagwa said that there were 2,587 fatal crashes while out of this figure, Niger state recorded 516 crashes which killed 597 people.
Speaking in a press conference in Minna to mark the 2018 World Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Crash Victims, the sector Commander said that he does not have the 2018 figures of road traffic crashes and deaths adding that the figures are still being compiled.
He said that the World Remembrance Day for road traffic victims is to sensitize the people on the effect of road traffic crashes adding that road traffic crashes can be preventable and avoidable.
“Beyond the statistics of the road traffic crashes, the victims may be fathers, mothers, spouses, children, friends, colleagues, neighbor. Their demise left in it’s wake trauma, economic dislocation and psychological disturbances.”
Dagwa then lamented over the careless attitude of most drivers on the road who believe that they are immune to road traffic crashes.
He stated that road safety is a shared responsibility which calls for all hands to be on deck, “The attitude manifested in the conduct of some road users who believe that they are immune to road traffic crashes has become worrisome. We need to know that if the statistics of road traffic crashes is to be reduced, the lot rests on all of us.”
