Volleyball Premier League: Nigeria Customs defeats Civil Defence 3-0 to lift trophy

Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) male volleyball club on Saturday beat the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) 3-1 in the Final Eight tournament of the Nigeria Volleyball Premier League.

NCS struggled to contain the NSCDC in the opening sets, but after their opponents drew level, the winners went a gear up.

After winning the opening set 26-24 in the game, NCS went on to lose 19-25, before going a gear up to win the next two sets 25-19 25-20.

In the competition played at the Abuja National Stadium’s indoor sports hall, NCS won all their five games in the six-team male competition of the tournament.

After winning their opening game on Monday against Plateau Rocks of Jos 3-0, they went on to win their second game against Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) 3-1.

They won their third match 3-0, against Nigeria Police Force (NPF), before adding Kano Pillars  to the list of their victims with a 3-0 win.

Speaking after Saturday’s game, the NCS coach, Femi Akanni, stated that his players never disappointed since the beginning of the league.

“I am glad that we won the final match. It was a tough journey for us since the beginning of the tournament. I thank God that we are able to achieve our target of taking the trophy home.

“This is a great success as we won both the male and female categories of the league. I’m happy that we made NCS proud in this competition,’’ he said.

On his part, the coach of NSCDC, Dennis Eleri, said he was happy still happy in spite of losing, saying it was a good thing to play in the final tournament.

“I congratulate NCS for their success. But I’m happy that  my teams played the final matches in both the male and female categories of the competition.

“It is unfortunate that luck was not on our side. In a match, there is always a winner and a loser and my players did try all their best. It was a tough game,’’ he said.

Winners NCS received a cash prize of N350,000, while second-placed NSCDC received a cash prize of N250,000 and third-placed NPF received N150,000.(NAN)
