The National Chairman of the Progressive Peoples Alliance PPA, Chief Sam Nkire has expressed disappointment over what he describes as federal government’s unwillingness to reduce the recurrent expenditure of the 2013 budget to a reasonable low. Chief Nkire said any government budget which provided less than 50% for capital expenditure in Nigeria at this time cannot bring about the desired development. The PPA National Chairman said the inability of the executive to drastically reduce next year’s recurrent budget estimate clearly showed that people in government were not ready to make sacrifices in order to provide basic amenities for the people.
Chief Nkire therefore urged members of the National Assembly as well as the States to ensure that this trend is reversed in favour of the people’s need. According to him, “shifting from 72% to 68% is no shift at all , considering the degree of infrastructural decay in land”.
Nkire however noted that budgetary recurrent expenditure pros-pals had moved from about 75% to 68% in the last two years but added that Nigeria needed “more than a snail’s speed to get to where we want to be by the year 2020”.
