Peter Maurer, the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), on Friday said that the selling of weapons to the parties to the Syrian conflict should be stopped.
Earlier in the week, Maurer visited Syria’s Eastern Ghouta as part of a humanitarian convoy.
“As long as rockets continue to fall on Eastern Ghouta and Damascus, as fighting continues in Afrin, as millions remain displaced, the ICRC is calling for … Anyone selling weapons that could be used in violation of international humanitarian law to stop such sales,”
Maurer said in a statement published by the ICRC.
The official added that the people selling arms to the parties of the conflict also bear responsibility for “battlefield behaviour.”
According to the ICRC president, the official added that the situation in Eastern Ghouta has significantly degraded.
The Arab Spring protests in Syria turned violent in 2011.
Since then the country has been mired in clashes between government troops, numerous opposition groups and terrorist organisations. (Sputnik/NAN)
