The National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party,PDP Alhaji Bamanga Tukur has finally resigned.Reports said President Goodluck Jonathan announced the end of Tukur’s era to members of the National Executive Committee NEC of the party.
Jonathan came to the meeting armed with Tukur’s resignation letter which he handed over Professor Wale Oladipo at the NEC meeting on Thursday.NEC eventually accepted the move.
Tukur’s ouster became apparent when members of the National Working Committee ,NWC refused to turn up for a meeting earlier in the week. But it also became palpable that Tukur was prepared to cling on to office despite all signs that the game was up.Thursday’s “resignation” seemed more like he was ousted.
It is on that PDP attained the worst times so far during Tukur’s chairmanship. Two sitting governors (Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State and Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto )were suspended from the party..One (Wamakko )was later recalled.
His leadership style and other reasons gave rise to a rebellion in the party which snowballed into a faction called new PDP.The NPDP eventually merged with the opposition All Progressives Congress,APC.
Thus, the ruling PDP lost five governors to the opposition in an unprecedented twist of political development in Nigeria.
Tukur’s successor is expected to be named on Monday.
