Reports just emerging from the Board of Trustees Meeting of Nigeria’s ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP said the party failed to elect a chairman yet again as the meeting was inclusive.Another BoT meeting also in Abuja is expected to hold next month ,during which it is hoped a new chairman will be elected .
One report quotes party officials describing Tuesday’s meeting as a house cleansing exercise .Whether this means that the number of aspirants will be further trimmed down remains unclear.
President Goodluck Jonathan is believed to be supporting Chief Tony Anenih to fill vacant BoT chairmanship seat. But ex President Olusegun Obasanjo who resigned from the post ,as well as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex military President Ibrahim Babangida are known to be working separately for other candidates.Obasanjo did not attend this meeting as he had been reported earlier to be in the UK.
But former vice President Alex Ekwueme was said to have been at the Tuesday night meeting. Jonathan,Vice President Namadi Sambo among others were also at the meeting.
It is believe the battle for 2015 presidential race may be influencing which candidate the stakeholders support for this key post. And the failure to fill the post is a reflection of the tough times within the top hierarchy of PDP.
Among those also known to be vying for the BoT slot include Ahmadu Alli,Ken Nnamani,Emmanuel Iwuanyawu etc.Tuesday’s meeting was the second time the party would be failing to elect a BoT Chair.
