For stealing goods valued at N7, 500, a 26-year-old man, Peter Igba, is to spend the next 12 months in jail, a Makurdi Upper Area Court ruled on Thursday.

The Judge, Mrs Fatima Akintomide, who handed down the verdict on Thursday, however, gave him an option of N10, 000 fine.

The convict had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of store-breaking and stealing and appealed for more time to enable him to pay back
all that he stole.

Akintomide said: “The accused, Igba, having pleaded guilty as charged, is sentenced to one year imprisonment with an option of fine of N10,000.”

Earlier, Police Prosecutor Veronica Shaagee told the court that the case was reported by the complainant, Mr John Melaba at `D’
Police Divisional Headquarters, Makurdi on Nov. 5.

Shaagee said the accused of the same above address with the complainant, broke into the provisions shop of Melaba and stole goods valued
at N7,500.

Items stolen include soap, Indomine, milk, salt, and Tombo Bitters.

The offences contravened Sections 246 and 287 of the Penal Code.  (NAN);/
