Former president of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and Transition Committee chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Comrade Abdulwaheed Umar has reiterated that plans are underway to organise congresses to elect officials for the party.

Umar revealed this in Kaduna at a reception organised in his honour by members of the Labour Party under the auspices of the Labour Party Patriotic Members Congress.

He said the only way to position the party was to organise congresses to elect genuine leaders and also have register of party members at ward levels.

He said the mandate given to the Transition Committee was to put the party in order and ensure it is a strong force in the 2027 elections, adding that this involved organising congresses from the ward levels to the national level.

“Our mandate as a Transition Committee is to ensure congresses are organised to elect authentic party officials at all levels so that there will be a complete register of members in preparation for future elections. As it is now, Abure’s tenure has expired and he must give way for the party to move on,” Umar said.

He bemoaned a situation where Abure is leading a revolt against the Labour Party that brought him to limelight. He noted that threatening to hold on to power illegally even after a court of competent jurisdiction has intervened on the matter of Abure’s tenure was worrisome for our democracy.

He dismissed allegations that there are factions in the Labour Party clarifying that LP is one and indivisible political party formed by the Nigerian Labour Congress to champion the cause of the Nigerian workers.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Kingsley Okundaye, national coordinator of Labour Party Patriotic Members Congress, urged LP members to support the Transition Committee, saying this is the best time to position the party.
