Another set of 234 women and children were rescued through the Kawuri and Konduga end of Sambisa forest on Thursday,Spokesman of Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters,Major General Chris Olukolade has said in a statement.
Olukolade said the newly freed women and children “ have been evacuated to join others at the place of ongoing screening. This set (is) in addition to the previous individuals earlier rescued during the ongoing operation in the area.”
The assault on the forest is continuing from various fronts and efforts are concentrated on rescuing hostages of civilians and destroying all terrorists camps and facilities in the forest,the statement said.
Earlier, the Nigerian military rescued about 293 including 200 girls and 93 women.Another set of women were reportedly freed ,but the number of people in the second set was not disclosed.
Despite all these massive rescue of girls and women from Boko Haram camps in Sambisa ,the defence headquarters has been hesitant in confirming or denying whether the Chibok School girls were among those so far freed.
Pictures of the rescued girls and women as well some of the children freed earlier showed evidence of malnutrition among the infants.
Briefing the press on Thursday,Olukolade said nobody can confirm or deny whether the Chibok girls were among those rescued yet until all those freed have been screened to determine their identities.
