The chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Attahiru Jega has been summoned by the Senate at the resumption of plenary on Tuesday .Jega has been asked to appear before the upper legislative chamber to explain the recent postponement of the 2015 general election.
Jega was invited on the heels of a point of order raised by the senate leader Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba under order 42. Ndoma-Egba moved that the INEC chairman should appear in order to brief the senate on the general preparation of the Commission for the conduct of the forthcoming elections.
The Senator said Jega should also come and explain the lopsided distribution of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) and demonstrate how the card reader functions .
When the matter was put to vote by the Senate President Senator David Mark, it was unanimously accepted by the Senator.
But opposition APC members said the invitation should be invited to all the security chiefs. However attempts by the Senate minority leader Senator ,Gorge Akume to amend the move by adding that security chiefs also be invited to explain why they cannot provide security for INEC to conduct the election did not sail through as the Senate president ,David Mark clarified that the security chiefs’ should come after the briefing by the INEC chairman.
Mark also urged the Senators to come along with their PVCs on Wednesday since the INEC chairman is coming to demonstrate the use of card reader.
