Women in Sokoto have urged the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, to ensure they get not less than 35 percent of all appointments should his party emerge victorious at the February 28 governorship election in the State.
The women, under the aegis of Women for Change, said a significant progress has been made in Sokoto in the last few years in areas of women empowerment, girl child education and improvements in maternal mortality rates.
Spokesperson of the group, Hajiya Turai Shehu, said with constant support from the state government, the number of girls enrolling in schools in rural areas in the state have quadrupled in recent years.
She said the momentum can only be maintained if the incoming administration shows interest and commitment to the issue.
Responding, Tambuwal, who is the governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto, commended the women for their concerns for the girl child.
He urged them to double their efforts and ensure that women are adequately mobilized to participate in the political process.
He promised that women would be given their rightful place in the scheme of things.
The Speaker also appealed to them to ensure that the forthcoming elections are peaceful.
