Protest Against N3.6bn Loan Turns Violent As Groups Clash In Sokoto

A protest on Wednesday by some youths groups against Sokoto state government’s letter to State House of Assembly for an approval to obtain a N3.6 billion loan ended on a violent note.The peaceful protest turned bloody with three vehicles, smashed and one other burnt to ashes.
Organized by some youths believed to be supporters of PDP, Newsdiaryonline.com gathered that the protest was against the state government’s quest to secure a loan of N3.6 billion for the completion of ongoing projects in the state.
The PDP youths started the protest from the roundabout of Binji Pharmacy on Kaduna Road and headed to the State House of Assembly, where they handed their letter of protest.
Newsdiaryonline.com gathered that some yet-to-be identified youths started throwing stones at passing vehicles, smashing their wind screens.
An official vehicle of Government House Press Crew, which was passing by was also attacked, Newsdiaryonline.com further gathered.
“We were passing through the area, on our way back to the Government House with our official vehicle when these youths attacked us; throwing stones at us,” a Press Crew member told our reporter who visited the scene of the clash late evening and saw the burnt car and motorcycle.
Anas Dan Nayaba, who led the protest told Newsdiaryonline.com that they were attacked by some youths after they had presented their letter to the House.
“It was after we have presented our letter to the House objecting to the loan, which we believe is meant to finance the 2015 campaign that we were attacked by some hoodlums who came on motorcycles. Nine of our members were injured.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Almustapha Sani confirmed the incident but faulted Dan-Nayaba claim that some of their members sustained injuries.
“The police have made one arrest and we are still investigating the matter to unravel the attackers,” DSP Sani told Newsdiaryonline.com.
