Mr Ajibade Adekunle, the South-West Zonal Commander, Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), says reckless driving is the cause of most road crashes in the state.

Adekunle stated this on Monday during a routine training for truck drivers at Nustanza Nigeria Limited, Onibuku, Ogun.

Represented by Mrs Victoria Olaoke, the Ota Divisional Commander, he said that many drivers treated their jobs with nonchalance, thereby endangering their lives and that of other road users.

He said that TRACE Corps Commander, Seni Ogunyemi, had mandated all commands to train truck drivers within their jurisdictions on the need to respect road safety rules.

“We have identified reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance as major challenges. This training is aimed at reducing road crashes in the state.

“When vehicles are not maintained, they breakdown on the highways, on-coming vehicles sometimes ram into such stationary vehicles.

“This can lead to serious crashes, injuries, and sometimes death. We need to turn a new leaf,” he said.

The commander further said that poor visibility, drunkenness and speeding are other factors that could cause crashes.

“We are appealing to truck drivers to desist from taking alcohol and other  intoxicating substances to avoid mishaps on the roads.

“Truck drivers should cooperate with traffic personnel, they should refrain from aggressive tendencies that endanger the life of road users,” he said.(NAN)
